The Workshop on “Management of Chikungunya arthritis- an
Ayurvedic approach” organized by Centre for Innovation in Science and
Social Action (CISSA) on 28th November 2006 at Hotel Pankaj,
Thiruvananthapuram was Inaugurated by Sri.Anavoor Nagappan, Hon.
President, District Panchayath, Thiruvananthapuram. The function
was presided over by Dr.C.Suresh Kumar, Triveni Nursing Home,
Renowned Ayurveda Physician was the chief guest, Dr.K.Sankaran,
Director, Ayurveda Medical Education, Govt of Kerala
Dr.Parameswaran Nair Dr P.S.Syamala Kumari, Principal, and
Panakajakasthuri Ayurveda Medical College. Dr.Hareendran Nair,
Managing Director, Panakaja Kasthuri Herbals India Ltd,
Dr.C.B.Justin Jose, Ayurveda Medical Association of India
offered felicitations.Dr K.S.Vishnu Namboothiri, Allapuzha
welcomed the dignitaries and Dr.S.Sunil Kumar, Sanjeevani
Ayurveda Hospital proposed vote of thanks.
In the first technical session Dr.C.Suresh Kumar, Govt Hospital,
Parassala has presented a paper “Chikungunya Epidemic – an
introduction” the paper covered the emergence of chikungunya in
Africa in 1953 and spread to various Continents. The
characteristics of the virus, the clinical features of the
disease, laboratory diagnosis and the measures to control the
vector Aedes mosquito were also dealt in detail.
Dr.M.R.Vasudevan Nampoothiri. Principal, Government Ayurveda
College, Thiruvananthapuram presented Ayurvedic Concepts &
Management of Chikungunya arthritis. In the second technical
session Dr.P.S.Chandran presented paper on Lessons from
Chikungunya outbreak in Cherthala. He narrated the various steps
taken by the Ayurvedic community in combating the epidemic in
Alapuzha. He also presented case histories to illustrate the
effectiveness of Ayurvedic medicines in treating acute as well
as chronic cases. Dr Indulal, Coimbatore presented Ayurvedic
philosophy behind treatment of new diseases.
In the third session Dr.J.Hareendran Nair presented Ayurvedic
approach to new emerging endemics in the context of Chikungunya.
He narrated his experience in making Ayurvedic medicine for bird
flu as soon as it was reported to have reached India. Such
immediate response his needed to make Ayurveda acceptable to the
modern world. Dr.P.L.T.Girija of Sanjeevani Ayurveda and Yoga
Centre Presented Paper on of the role of Ayurveda in Public
Health.
The Last session was a group discussion coordinated by Dr.
V.S.Vishnu Namboothiri. Medical officer, Panchakarma Hospital,
Alapuzha. In the group discussion the medical officers shared
their experience in managing Chikungunya epidemic and discussed
possible public health activities that can be initiated by
Ayurveda.
