Chairperson's Message
Greetings from Annam !!!
‘Annam’, food, is considered sacred in India, also in many other
cultures. Traditional food cultures have their innate strengths
and are often highly scientific for a given culture and region.
These are being vanquished by the spreading fast food culture
and earnest efforts to deter these are now a top priority.
Devastating effects of corporate driven foods and farming
systems have turned agriculture into an extractive industry and
food into a major health hazard. We are poorer as the
biodiversity of our farms disappears and as the cultural
diversity of our food systems vanish. ‘The Annam’- Good Food
Movement launched in Thiruvananthapuram in 2008 which aims at
addressing this scenario is entering its next phase.
The ‘Annam- National Food & Agro Biodiversity Festival’ held at
Thiruvananthapuram from 27th to 31st December 2008, became a
landmark event and the festival is now being held at Kozhikode
from 11th to 15th February 2010. It would be a rendezvous of
scientists, policy makers conservationists, agriculturists,
nutritionists, environmentalists and farmers; this will be a
platform to exhibit the food diversity, share ideas and to
support the Annam Movement in its stride towards good food
culture, food sovereignty and food security.
The health of a nation is the sum total of the well being of its
citizens, which basically depends on the kind of food they
consume and the lifestyle they pursue. This festival will
showcase our rich diversity of food, agriculture and the
cultural panorama pertaining to food.
On behalf of the organizing committee, I have great pleasure in
inviting you to the “Annam- National Food & Agro Biodiversity
Festival” to be held at Kozhikode.
We look forward to your patronage and participation in this
festival and associated events.
Dr. Vandana Shiva
