Workshop on Adolescent Management

Report
The workshop on ADOLESCENT MANAGEMENT organized by Centre for
Innovation in Science and Social Action (CISSA) for Professional
College Teachers was held at Thiruvananthapuram on 8th September
2007 which addressed the various issues of students like
multicultural and gender problems, career and developmental
needs, managing depression, psychological problems like sexual
digression, suicidal tendency, substance abuse and various forms
of violence including ragging.
Workshop was inaugurated by Dr. K.A. Kumar, former director of
Medical education. In his inaugural address, Dr. Kumar stressed
the need of adolescent management today. He explained in detail
the need for various monitoring mechanisms in order to detect
such problems and how they can be prevented.
Dr.S. Jayaram, former
Superintendent of Mental Health Centre, Thiruvananthapuram
handled the next session. The session was an interactive session
asking participants to go through the presentation and
explaining thoroughly the various aspects of psychiatric
problems that can occur in this period. He explained in detail
the human relations and emotional empowering role of teachers in
stress management. Dr. K. Raju,
Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, handled the next session:
“Psycho – sexual development and problems of adolescents”. He
emphasized how sex education has a very important role in
shaping the behavior during this age group.
Adv. Madathil N.Harikumar, a
leading advocate, described in detail how law sees such problems
like “Ragging”. He explained what are the practical steps to be
taken once such incidents happen, under what sections of Indian
Penal Code such matters are covered and who all will be
affected, how is various evidences seen by the court – in what
angle – and role of teachers to stop such problems.
The final session was handled by Smt. Novma Money, Workshop
coordinator & a veteran psychiatric counselor, who essentially
emphasized on the various counseling methods available for
handling students with mental health problems. |
