WORKSHOP

National workshops were held on three important themes. Organic Farming, Heritage Foods and Traditional Foods and Farming on House Terrace from 28 - 30 December 2008, as part of “ANNAM”- National food and Agro biodiversity festival. The workshops were coordinated by Dr. N. Kishore Kumar, Professor, Kerala Agricultural University.

Workshop on Organic Farming was inaugurated by Dr. K. Harikrishnan Nair, Dean, College of Agriculture, Vellayani. The participants shared their views on organic agriculture and indiscriminate application of fertilizers and pesticides.

The open forum was mediated by Dr. M. Subhramania Iyer, Associate Director of Kerala Agricultural University. Dr. R. Regunath, Retd. Professor, Dr. Krishna Kumar, CPCRI, Kayamkulam Dr. M. Vijayan Prof. & Head Dept. of Animal Husbandry were the resource persons. The workshop was coordinated by Dr. K. Usha Kumari, Professor of Soil Science, Kerala Agricultural University.

Heritage foods/traditional foods workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Mrs. Vasantha, Retd. Dean Kerala Agriculture university. The experts from Sri Avinashilingam Home Science College, Coimbatore. Dr. Thelakamani and Dr. Premila Priyadarshini led the sessions. Demo on traditional foods was also organized by the participants. Traditional Food Culture of Malabar, Travancore, Nanjinadu, were elaborated.

The Workshop on Farming on House Terrace was coordinated by Dr. V. B. Padmanabhan and Dr. O. Kumari Swadija, Professors of Kerala Agricultural University. Terrace farming is an ideal way for modern urban families and the theme was well received.

Dr. V. B. Padmanabhan, Dr. O. Kumari Swadija, Mr. K. Bhaskaran Nair, Mr. T. K. Bhaskara Paniker and Prof. P. Reghunath handled various sessions. Recorded radio and television programmes on terrace farming were also shown. The enthusiasm of the participants paved the way for initiating an association of farmers interested in organic farming on house terrace in the State.
